On-Site Insight 2019

Do you like building things?

Do you like working with robots?

Do you like to see how things are made?

Do you like solving real-world problems?

Students entering the 8th grade this fall can see some of the many interesting local advanced technical careers that are often overlooked because people do not know they exist. We will do this by going on industry tours in mornings, then following up with hands-on activities at the Fulton Montgomery Community College campus and HFM CTC Engineering Technology lab each afternoon. FM is proud to offer this through a National Science Foundation (NSF) project; TECH Lane.

Students will be challenged to complete projects that are paralleled by similar processes during industry tours. Students will be able to ask engineers and technicians questions to learn about different ways to accomplish their tasks. Hands-on activities will allow students to experiment and improve their designs .

Cost:

No cost to students. This activity is funded though the TECH-Lane National Science Foundation grant and FMCC in cooperation with HFM Career and Technical Center.

Lunch will be provided free of charge to participants each day.

"My son had a great opportunity with this program he learned new things met new people and came home very excited about what he had accomplished. Would he do this program again ABSOLUTELY!" (Comment from a parent.)

Schedule:

One 5-day session:

Monday August 5 through Friday August 9, 2019, from 9 AM to 3 PM each day.

Students will need to be dropped off at and picked up from FMCC each day.

Transport to manufacturing facilities will be provided via school buses.

"As a local science teacher, I was thrilled that my daughter could participate in a program that allowed her to explore careers in technology. She enjoyed visiting the businesses and the hands on experiences at the college, especially building her own amplifier." (Comment from a parent.)

"This was a great opportunity for my child. While the camp was more focused on technology in manufacturing than the engineering and design process, it was still a valuable week. Hands-on, real world experience can't be beat. At an age where there are many big decisions ahead, this was great timing for the students to see and learn what is out there in the technology field. About:

This project is funded by the National Science Foundation and is a collaboration between Fulton-Montgomery Community College and the HFM BOCES Career & Technical Center.

FMCC has an Electrical Technology 2-year Associates (A.A.S) degree that leads to a variety of jobs in the technology industry locally. This degree also transfers into programs offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.

The HFM BOCES Career & Technical Center has an Engineering Technology program that enables high school students to earn the first year of the FM Elec Tech degree, without cost to the student, by high school graduation. The student can attend FMCC full time for one year and start a career with great opportunities, or continue to their 4-year degree.
