And probably one of the coldest too! We got unlucky there, as it was packed to the rafters with pilgrims, but this is the site of the Burning Bush and is well worth seeing. Bear in mind that this site is important to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. After that, it was a ride back to our Sinai beach resort, and time for another chillout session. So, when we shall characterize a feature as deserving particular attention, we mean that it is noteworthy at least in a minuscule manuscript assignable to the IXth century. As a last preliminary, and for the sake of honesty, let me set down my own first impression, if only to demonstrate how it can sometimes prove misleading, and how even palaeographers can go astray. Perhaps not unworthy of note are the following forms : capital B with the sinuous pinched lower bow 17 , capital L with its foot descending below the line in an oblique flourish 18 ; the cursive ligatures of ad on ff. I begin again with a unique form : mda for misericordia, used throughout the manuscript pi. I have never before encountered mda in any Latin manuscript, nor have others whom I have consulted. It is not. This then should be one of the prize clues! Abbreviation by omitting the vowels — a system formed on the skeleton principle of retaining most consonants and omitting most vowels,. These symbols would normally be accounted for by assuming Insular influence, but the likelier explanation is that they, as well as the et symbol, are survivals of a more ancient tradition. These examples suggest that the scribe or the exemplar comes from a region in which the c in such words as cera had the hard sound. It is interesting to note that this type of error also occurs in several of the oldest manuscripts in Irish script Curiously enough, some old Insular manuscripts have this strange feature : e. This type of misspelling is found in many manuscripts but more frequently in Visigothic. This happens only in the Calendar, which is an informal affair — a sort of appendix to the Psalter — in which the scribe felt free and easy and probably wrote the word as he pronounced it. He has several saints' names in the nominative where one would expect the genitive. Similar syllabification in Latin manuscripts is unknown to me, but it occurs here and there in Greek minuscule
