The word "electrocute" was coined in the U.S as a joining of "electric" and "execution" in 1889 to refer to the death penalty by electric chair, a device that was invented by Thomas Edison. It then became used to describe loss of life due to electrical shock. You can survive an electrical shock but you can not survive losing your life from it.
